(later scene, part 1 or 2: Jeffrey took Frankie to lunch at a gyro shop downtown, on a nice late spring or early summer day) "You see that little empty shop next to the bookstore?" Frankie looked across the street to where Jeffrey had indicated. "Mm-hm." "Greg's gonna help me buy it." Jeffrey's eyes twinkled as he sipped his smoothie. "Really." "Uh-huh." Frankie took another bite from his gyro while he waited for Jeffrey to continue. "I was in the mood for humus one day. But we didn't have any, and I didn't feel like making it because it takes too long. I woulda had to soak the beans, and I wanted it right then, y'know?" He smirked. Frankie sipped his soda. "Mm-hm." "And then I looked on my phone for a humus bar, but I didn't find one. I even hauled out the old Yellow Pages, remember those? And then I mentioned it to Greg that night." He glanced away in thought. "Was that before sex? I remember we had sex in the living room, it'd been a while and we just kinda jumped on each other." He thought for a moment. Frankie continued eating. "Anyway, we definitely talked about it after sex. Greg thought it was a good idea, and he suggested that I take some business classes. So I'm gonna go to college. Again." He poked his straw in the remainder of his smoothie, then gasped. "You should come too, it'd be fun! We could check out the guys together, help with each other's homework, and it might come in handy someday." He looked quite pleased with himself. Frankie swallowed the last bite of his gyro. Not bad, but he still would have preferred a cheeseburger. He creased his brow, not sure what to ask first. "Um...what would come in handy?" "Knowing how to run a business!" "Oh." "Maybe someday you'll want to open a store, and you'll know how." "Mm. Maybe." Frankie doubted it, running a business was something other people did. "So...stupid question: why are you buying that shop?" "To open a humus bar. I was thinking, instead of lots of little tables, have a few big tables so everyone can sit together. You know, meet new friends and stuff." back home |
